Possessive Billionaire Prince Page 2
I slip into a pair of black boxers, a pair of black pants, and a white T-shirt and head to the kitchen. That’s why I love living in New York. I have more freedom here. In the Kingdom of Fairland, it would have taken half an hour to order and receive a coffee. There, I was constantly surrounded by staff or armed bodyguards.
In the modern kitchen of my penthouse, I find my cousin Spencer and my personal secretary, Xavier. They both have gloomy faces, and I wonder what’s happened.
The table is full of newspapers, and I can only imagine what they are saying. And of course, there are also the online editions that I have to worry about.
My cousin Spencer looks at me with a somber face and closes the newspaper in front of him. He frowns when he looks at me and then clears his throat. “You’re awake. That’s good,” he says, gesturing to the pile of newspapers on the table. “You have a problem,” he says.
I’m intrigued because my cousin isn’t the kind of person who worries for every little thing. Xavier, my assistant, stands up and bows his head. “Your Highness,” he says. I frown because he looks ready to throw up his dinner. Something is not right. By that, I mean much more screwed up than usual.
I sigh deeply and nod. “Let me have some coffee first. I didn’t sleep well,” I say apologetically. “And sit down Xavier, it’s too early for protocol.”
I pour myself some coffee and sit down at the table, frustrated. I was hoping I could go to the office today, get some work done, and forget all about the curvy brunette I met last night. “So, what’s the matter?” I ask and take a sip of coffee. It’s nice and black, just the way I like it. I run my hand through my hair and look at their bleak faces. My parents have finally agreed on a bride, and most likely she’s ugly. Or someone died. Otherwise, I can’t explain their reaction. I sigh deeply and swear at my brother once more. He is guilty of all this. It wasn’t enough for him to steal my fiancée, he had to steal my life too. I was just the spare until the day he and Edward got on that damn boat.
Spencer and I both lost our brothers that day, and we became heirs. I’ll be a king someday, and he’ll be a duke when his father passes.
“Just tell me, cousin. Did my parents finally agreed on a bride?” I ask.
He shakes his head and gestures toward the table.
I feel my scalp tingling and my eyelids twitching. “I don’t care about the papers, Spencer. I already know what they say. Some shit about how lucky I am to be a prince and how many women I fuck.”
He clears his throat and shifts in his chair. “You really should read the papers, Alex.”
I shrug and grab one from the table. “Prince Alex is engaged to a marketing assistant who works for a famous jewelry store,” the headline said.
I feel the blood draining from my face. “What the fuck is this?” There is even a picture of me in the elevator, on my knees, placing that damn ring on her finger.
I look at Xavier. He’s blinking erratically with a crazed expression.” I’m sorry, Your Highness, it’s my fault,” he says.
I shake my head in disbelief. “It’s not your fault, Xavier.”
“Just send a press release that says Miss Kate what’s-her-last-name is an old friend, and we are definitely not engaged.”
Xavier’s face turns white, and he takes another paper and hands it to me. “I think the girl sold the story, sir. There is an article about one of her girlfriends, and she confirms the engagement. She says the two of you are very much in love and will get married next year.”
“WTF!” I yell and grab the edges of the table until my knuckles turn white. “Just send the damned press release. We’ll make a liar out of her. She’ll be the laughingstock of the world.”
“That’s just the problem, sir,” Xavier says. “The palace has confirmed the engagement. The king says he’s very happy with the news.”
Chapter 3
Kate
I did not sleep last night. I’m so disappointed.
Prince Alex is not how I imagined. I’m more determined than ever to forget about my crush. Unfortunately, I don’t know how I’m going to do that after last night’s kiss. I’ve never been kissed like that. It’s clear the guy knows what he’s doing. After all, he’s had a lot of practice, I think bitterly.
He had that male arrogance and command in his eyes when he kissed me. Like he had the right to kiss me. He’s used to women fawning over him, so he imagined I’d do the same.
I enter the building and I’m headed for the elevator when Mario, the security guy, yells at me. “Congratulations, Kate,” he says. I frown and give him a small smile. I have no idea what he’s talking about.
My mom calls as I reach my desk, but I decide I’m going to call her back later. I don’t want to anger Darius if he’s around. I open my laptop in a hurry and I realize that everyone is whispering and looking at me. What is it with everyone today? They’re all acting very strange. My mom calls again, and I want to answer her when I hear my boss’s voice.
“Kate!” my boss Darius yells, startling me. “Come to my office. Now!”
Oh my God, I hope he didn’t find out I delivered the ring instead of Lily. She really can’t afford to lose her job—or especially her health insurance. Her child needs that insurance to stay alive, so I’m going to do my best for her to keep said job. I walk to my boss’s office when someone chuckles behind me. “Where’s your ring, Kate?” One of my coworker mumbles.
I groan. “Oh my God, it looks like everyone knows I delivered that ring. Darius is going to fire me,” I mumble to myself.
I take a deep breath and knock at the door. My boss keeps typing and doesn’t look up at me. That’s not a good sign.
I clear my throat to get his attention. He stops typing and leans back in his chair. “Kate, what happened last night with the Roberts ring? You ditched your escort.”
“Please, don’t get mad, Darius. Please! Lily’s kid got sick again, so I offered to take the ring to the restaurant,” I explain. “I met with the client in the kitchen, and he signed the papers. I’m sorry about the security guy, but I didn’t see him when I got out of the elevator. Everything is fine!”
“Everything is fine?” he says through gritted teeth. “Then why is that damn ring on the front page of every newspaper in the world? With you wearing it?”
I gape at him. “What are you talking about?” I have a nasty feeling the paparazzi published last night’s photos with the prince, so I dash for the door to retrieve my phone from my desk.
The door opens before I can touch the handle. It’s Marjorie, Darius’s assistant. “I’m sorry to interrupt, Darius, but Kate has a visitor.”
“Kate has a visitor?” he says, and a muscle in his clenched jaw spasms. “Kate, you know very well that we come here to work, not to socialize, so please see your friends outside of business hours. Marjorie, please tell her guest that Kate is busy,” Darius continued.
Marjorie clears her throat and closes the door, regarding us like she has a big secret to tell us. “He’s not a friend, Darius,” she whispers like it’s some great secret she’s sharing with us. “He’s, you know, the Prince of Fairland, that country in Europe. Anyway, he’s Kate’s fiancé. By the way, Kate, congratulations on your engagement. It’s really unexpected. I didn’t know you were seeing someone,” she says. The reproach oozes out of her.
“Fiancé?” I ask in shock, and Prince Alexander appears at the door.
“Hello, baby,” he says and kisses me on the cheek. He looks impeccable in a dark gray suit. His hair is combed, and he’s freshly shaved. He is terribly handsome and sexy. Marjorie stares at him, and I can’t blame her.
Darius looks at me in shock and then at the Prince, not knowing what to say. Alex holds out his hand and says, “Hi, I’m Alex.”
“Hello, Your Majesty,” my boss stumbles. I chuckle. Darius is meeting rich and powerful men on a daily basis, but even he gets flustered by the prince.
“I’m Darius Kincaid, sales manager and Kate’s boss. You’re lucky to have Kate. She’s a
great girl.”
Alex turns his cold brown eyes toward me. “Yeah, she’s a million-dollar girl, I agree with you. Do you mind if we use your office, Mr. Kincaid?”
“I don’t think it’s a problem. Stay as long as you want. I have a meeting anyway,” Darius lies.
“I have something to talk to my fiancée about,” he says through gritted teeth, and a vein throbs in his neck. Marjorie winks at me and gestures toward Alex.
I roll my eyes. “Alex,” I say, and they all gape at me. “This is Marjorie, Darius’ assistant.”
Alex extends his hand. Marjorie starts laughing nervously, and Darius grabs her elbow and pulls her out of the office.
“I’m sorry,” I tell Alex apologetically.
He shrugs. “It’s nothing. Some people react strangely when they meet me. Nothing surprises me anymore.”
“Why are you here, Alex?” A muscle in his jaw spasms and a thunderous expression crosses his face. I can see the fury burning hot and wide inside of him.
“Darius told me about an article in the newspaper, but I haven’t seen it. I’m sorry, I’m hope you didn’t get in trouble with your family,” I say.
He scowls as he turns towards me. I take a step back until I hit the wall. He braces his hands on either side of me, caging me with his strong body. “I should yell at you for what you did,” he says, and I feel his hot breath on my cheek. “I was so mad at you at home for selling the story to the papers,” he whispers.
“I didn’t sell any story to the papers,” I say. He stares into my eyes like he can extract the truths hidden inside my head.
“Perhaps,” he says in that raspy and sexy voice that makes my insides melt and burn with need for him.
“It’s the truth,” I say.
He shrugs. “We’ll talk later. I want to kiss you now,” he says.
I frown. “You accuse me of selling you out, but you want to kiss me? Are you for real? You didn’t even ask me out and you want to make out?”
He smiles like a naughty schoolboy. “That’s the beauty of having a fiancée! You can kiss her whenever you want,” he says, and I see the saw the flash of amusement in his eyes.
“Fiancée? What are you talking about?”
“Don’t say anything, Kate. Just kiss me,” he demands. His lips touch mine, a light teasing kiss, just enough to still my resistance. It’s a different kiss than yesterday. His lips are more hurried, hungry, needy.
I stop the kiss and he looks at me, dazed. He touches my forehead with his forehead. “I haven’t told you everything, Kate. You’ll have to come home with me. To Fairland!”
I frown. “Home? To your country?”
“Yes, you know, my kingdom. I’m sorry, I wouldn’t involve you if there was any another way, okay?”
He grabs my ass and pulls me to him, and I can feel his erection through his pants. “This is what you do to me. I’ve been dreaming about you all night. I want to fuck you so much it hurts,” he says, and he gently bites my bottom lip, sending a jolt of desire to my core.
“You do?” I say, and he kisses me again. No man has ever spoken to me this way. I feel wanted and sexy, but all of this could be a ploy to get me into his bed.
He pulls away, and I see him trying to gain control of his emotions. “We need to talk about the engagement.”
“We are not engaged. What the fuck are you talking about, Alex?”
“You really don’t know?”
“I really don’t know,” I say.
He pulls his phone from his jacket and gives it to me. “You need to read the papers,” he says.
I’m horrified at the headlines, and I understand why he’s so upset. “We can say it’s not true, can’t we?” I ask.
He shakes his head. “Unfortunately, we can’t. The palace has confirmed the engagement.”
I sit down quickly. I feel like I’ve been stuck struck by lightning. “I don’t understand why your parents would confirm the engagement.”
“Yeah, I don’t it understand either,” he says “My parents told the newspapers in my country that they are happy with the news. Let’s go,” he says and turns toward the door.
“Go where? I’m working. I just can’t leave.”
He nods. “I’ll pick you up at five tomorrow after work. We’ll talk then and go shopping.”
“Shopping? Why would you take me shopping?”
He chuckles. “You need a makeover.”
“What’s wrong with me?”
“Nothing is wrong with you. You are perfect the way you are. You just need a new wardrobe. Palace clothes.”
“Palace clothes?” I ask, confused.
“That’s what I called it. I feel like I put on a costume and play a role when I go there. Think of it as a stage attire. Look, I will pay you if you do this for a couple of months. Just name your price. I can’t have a scandal right now. We can later announce that we’ve split. Given my reputation, nobody will be surprised.”
“I need to think about it, okay? I’ll give you my answer tomorrow.”
“Okay,” he concedes. “But can I kiss you goodbye?”
“Sure.” Truth is, I kind of like his kisses.
His lips touch mine, and I melt into his arms. “Can we include sex in our little arrangement?” he whispers. “I want to fuck you so bad.”
“Wow. Those aren’t exactly the words every woman wants to hear. You’re the most romantic prince in the world.” My voice is dripping with sarcasm, and he winces.
“Sorry, but it’s the truth,” he mumbles, properly chastised.
“I don’t know about the sex, Alex. I don’t sleep around. I’m a virgin,” I mumble.
“You’re a virgin? How is that possible?”
“I haven’t had sex until now. That’s what being a virgin means. I’m kind of waiting for my Prince Charming.”
“Well, we can change that if you want. No pressure,” he says. “You’re safe with me. I swear,” he says.
I’m surprised by his behavior today. He was a jerk yesterday, but I like him better today. “See you at five tomorrow,” he says and leaves.
Chapter 4
Alex
The discussion with my parents did not go as I thought it would. I thought my father would be angry about my alleged engagement to Kate, but he congratulated me on finding my future wife. He told me that he and mom are happy with the news. They just want me to get married.
I didn’t mention the arranged marriage, and he didn’t either. Of course, he asked me to bring Kate home to the kingdom as soon as possible. I promised him I would come home in a few days and bring Kate with me. I hope she’ll say yes. I also warned him that I would not tolerate anyone’s mistreatment of Kate.
Now, I’m on my way to Kate’s office to pick her up. I still can’t believe how my life has changed in just a few days. One minute I was at a party with a hot girl, and the next minute I’m engaged to the curvy beauty in the elevator. Truth is, the hot girl at the party bored me, and that’s why I left early. I’ll never be bored of Kate.
I don’t know what to do about the engagement ring. In the photos published online, Kate is wearing her client’s ring. But, of course, my future wife can’t wear a ring I bought at a store. I’ll have to go home and choose a ring suitable for my future queen.
My family has a huge jewelry collection, and my father has added to it over the years. Our kingdom is small but very rich, with huge revenues from tourism and the exploitation of diamonds and oil. At the same time, I have a personal fortune of billions, thanks to the business I run with my cousin.
When my grandfather, the former king, died, he left me a big sum of money. In the early years, I spent some of it on parties and women, but then I met Caroline and fell in love. I wanted to build an independent life with her, so I went into business with my cousin. And we did very well. In ten years, we’ve built a billion-dollar corporation, so I’m rich in my own right. My parents don’t like it because I’m harder to control than my brother was. However, I realize
I have a duty to my country and my people, so I cannot relinquish the throne. In addition, next in line to the throne is my cousin’s father and then my cousin, Spencer. He’d kill me if I gave up the throne because that would mean he would have to take over as king one day. He’s even less qualified and eager than I am.
I sigh deeply. Things would have been different if my brother hadn’t died. I watch as Kate leaves the building and waves to me. We’re going to buy her a wardrobe suitable for the palace. The courtiers would have a heart attack if Kate appeared in her normal clothes, especially the torn jeans she’s wearing now. Personally, I think she looks incredible in those jeans because they highlight her appetizing bottom.
My new driver, Mario, opens Kate’s door, and she climbs in next to me. Automatically, I bend down to kiss her. She blushes adorably when I do this, and it only makes my cock harder.
“Hi, Alex,” she says.
“Hi, Kate,” I say, and I smile, amused by her blush. “You look good. I love the ripped jeans.”
“I’m sorry about them. I spilled coffee on my dress and had to change.”
“Do you have your answer to my question?” I ask, holding my breath. If she says no, I’m in big trouble.
“I’m, here aren’t I? Are you sure you want to spend so much money on clothes? I have some elegant dresses I think are nice enough. I don’t need you to buy me new clothes.”
I laugh heartily. “Kate, my dear, you’re a breath of fresh air. You’re the first woman I’ve ever met who doesn’t want to spend my money and who doesn’t want to go shopping.”
She laughs, and I like the dimples that appear in her cheeks when she smiles. “Of course, I like to go shopping, but I like to spend my own money.”
I chuckle. “That’s really a weird concept coming from a woman,” I say, and we both laugh. She’s funny, and I know I’ll enjoy spending my afternoon with her.
It takes us a few hours to buy everything we need, and I realize I’d rather go shopping with Kate than fuck any other woman. This woman is dangerous, and if I’m not careful, she could break my heart.
Kate deserves the best, so I’ll ask my father for access to the crown jewelry. I want to choose a ring for her.
